HOW DOES IPL (INTENSE PULSED LIGHT) WORK? |
Light is a form of energy that is made up of different wavelengths and can penetrate into different depths in the skin. These waves of light infiltrate the skin and target colour particles e.g. melanin in the hair follicle or haemoglobin in the blood. The pigment molecules absorb the light and in turn generate sufficient heat to retard the normal functioning of the target tissue: e.g. Hair contains colour pigment called melanin - which absorbs the laser light and transmits it down to the root. The root is then damaged and is unable to produce new hair effectively. In this way - hair is progressively reduced in count and/ or density In the case of inflamed acne – the IPL light activates a compound called porphyrin which destroys the bacteria. This can reduce or eliminate papules and pustules (the most common form of pimples and breakouts). IPL is also able to lighten scarring and discolouration by the same mechanism of action – making this therapy versatile for a number of different uses. |
